What you need to be aware of on etsy is that it is only a HOSTING site for thousands of different users. The SITE is safe; but like any website, not all the USERS are. While I love the site and have both bought and sold there many times, there ARE some "bad apples" there. Check both the FEEDBACK of the seller and the LOCATION, to be sure that you are getting what you want from a reliable seller, and that it will arrive in a timely fashion without excessive shipping charges.
I think it's reliable and safe, except a lot of the sellers on there aren't really selling hand crafted stuff. A lot of them just buy mass-produced junk from China and mark it up ten times and pretend it's handmade. The odd thing is when people complain to Etsy about it, they ignore it - I think because they would rather have the business from the maximum number of sellers.
