It's a scam.....U of Washington is warning its students about this honorsoiety.org
Alert: Many UW students recently received a solicitation from honorsociety.org, a website claiming to be affiliated with the University of Washington. UW and the Honors Program have no affiliation with this organization. We strongly recommend checking the Association of College Honor Societies website (http://www.achsnatl.org/) if you are suspicious about the legitimacy of any honors society soliciting you for membership. The ACHS is an organization that assists in verifying the legitimacy of programs such as those mentioned above.
The fact that you used to subscribe to a professional trade organization is probably the very reason you have been contacted, odds are you were in a mailing list sold by those publishers.
Have a look at lists.nextmark.com if you want to see how many such demographically targeted mailing lists are rented.

One comment suggested the fact that they accept $50 payment up front, before your qualifications are reviewed makes it look scammy.
It's not a joke or a scam. Being in a professional organization likely lead to you being invited in the first place. Congrats on your acceptance.
They certainly have the evidence to back up that there are real benefits to be part of it- 47K facebook fans, but even as anecdotal evidence- being a member helped me get an internship and I was able to claim use of language classes to help for my study abroad. I would recommend it.

I got an email from them saying I've been accepted into the society and it had my name & university name in it and I do have good grades so I thought it might be real. I used to subscribe to a professional trade organization that charged annual dues so i thought this might be real.
