Is this form of advertising illegal?

They probably would just refuse to pay you. Unless they state they will pay you, then you'll just be giving them free advertisement. If you did not consult them, they'd just thank you for the advertisement and stop the contact.

I understand where are you coming from, it could work, or not work.

i can suggest you one way where you would be definitely in benefit even if the company denies for any incentives to you in response to your free advertising for the company.

For an example -if you make a Facebook page about a company that never created a Facebook page for themselves, then it would/could be a winning situation ( more or less) for you.Later you can sell the Facebook page to the company. If the company doesn't pay you for free advertising to the company( in form of facebook page). You can en cash the popularity of that page through other means.

same way you can talk to a company offer them about submitting their company location and address details on Google (through Google Places) and you can ask some money from them for the job done.

But always think before advertising what you would be getting if the concerned company denies you for any money for your advertising to the company?

All the best!

You could do the same thing without making it sound like blackmail, say you had a local directory site, you could tell a business that you had given them a complimentary 'featured listing' last month, "did they experience any increase in sales?" here are my rates for that continued added exposure.

That would typically be a bad investment of your time, you would be better off paying a salesman a commission for securing advertising sales, the perceived value if the service is harmed by your giving away samples.

They don't have to pay you a cent. There was NO CONTRACT between you for your services, either express or implied. Just because you felt like voluntarily doing some advertising for them absolutely DOES NOT obligate them to pay you a penny. In fact, if you use the name of their company in your advertising, they could serve you with a Cease & Desist order for violating their copyright.

Don't try it. You'll find yourself up to your neck in legal trouble.

Say, for example, that I found unique way to advertise for a company that the company has absolutely no involvement in (I did not consult them or contact them in any way). Now say that I want the company to pay for my services. Could I email somebody in the company and try to find a way to tell them that I will stop advertising for them (in this unique way that nobody else has done so far) unless they pay me some amount of money? (assuming I could sell it to them). Also, would a PayPal account be the best way for them to pay me if it did end up working out?
