So is all you have to bring to the project an idea?
It could turn out to be an expensive undertaking to developer the server side code a "complex" idea wold typically require.
You can hire freelance developers, perhaos skilled ones in countries with a low cost of living, through freelance marketplaces like Elance.com, Odesk.com or vworker.com it can easily cost hundreds of dollars to get a simple site with unique functionality.
You could give a general functionality description for workers to bid on, then require the selected developer to sign a non disclosure agreement before giving all the details.
Bear in mind some of the big successes like Facebook and Youtube lived off investor money for years before they started to profit from advertising.
Try developing a business plan that will identify the costs of starting this and the expected customers and revenue streams. That may help develop your "idea" into a business without much (hard) cost but a lot of hard work the results of which will be highly beneficial to you starting up and making a success.
Or start small to get it running and show the potential before developing the "complicated" bit
To get your own website started (regardless of what interest/niche you choose) you'll need to get a domain name from somewhere like NameCheap or CrazyDomains, I don't really like the Godaddy interface.
Once you have a domain name you'll need to host it somewhere. Site5 is pretty good for anywhere you are in the world cos you can choose to have you servers located in the US or in other states/countries. Their first month is also free so you have time to see if it's for you or not :)
A friend and I have a great idea for a website but don't know where to start when it comes to actually develop it. Personally, we think it could make a lot of money, but we know it's going to take a lot of trouble to actually develop. There is a lot of complexity to the idea, so all I want to know is what would be a good starting point?
