Actually just getting a few backlinks from sites already indexed will typically get your site indexed as the spiders 'discover' the site.
Pinging updated pages gets some indexes to review it more quickly, pingler.com and pingomatic.com are both mass pingers (maybe doing too much)

You understand correctly, it does take a while to show up in the search engines. However you should be seeing it when entering your URL. I suggest filing a site map with Google analytics.

If your website does not appear, it means that you need to wait or use other services for faster indexing of your website.
Build a sitemap. Then I suggest some high quality backlinks to help your site rank higher in the search engines and increase traffic. Submit your main site URL with keywords relating to your site.
Your website will take 24 hours or more time may be. So wait and do work on your website to make interested for users.
