Your choosing a subject with limited money making potential, people talking about photography are better able to rent ad space for camera stores.
Try to not use excessively artsy designs that compromise the readability of the text, script font or low contrast text is a bad idea, remember there are differences when viewed on others screens.
Make regular posts to keep the search engines interested, some pre-write content and schedule it for automatic publishing on a schedule.

Which Wordpress? Is on a self-hosted website or are you using the free script from Wordpress.com.
There'e lot of free ebooks & videos on Wordpress (just Google for them) but it will depend on what version you're using. If you intend to sell your poetry/writing it will make it an e-commerce blog so it should be a self-hosted website otherwise you can easily break many of the T&Cs of a free site and find your site is blocked/deleted.
