Those free domain names are typically not worth your while, the last the was in the news were the 11 Million .cc.co names that Google removed from their index after a high frequency of fraud was associated with the easy to get, poorly managed names. The significant effort required to make a site a success makes the $12 a year for a domain name look trivial.
As suggested above there are plenty of free hosts that provide a subdomain, that might turn out to get better search ranking and traffic than one of those outlaw free domains.
Just do a web search for: list of free TLDs, to get lists like this one:

I registered a free .com domain name for my darts team a few months back, if you get a basic hosting package I think most of the established sites will or at least should give you a free domain name when you click on the hosting. I used Boogie as the livechat were pretty good at talking me through getting the pages up, not very tech savvy and needed the support.
