Forum Posting is nothing but a discussion board in which people share their views. Different people come together and the knowlegeable person share his or her knowlege with others and other people clear their doubts from here. Forum posting should be done on high PR sites so as to get good value for your site but the discussion should be of high quality and not spammy as you may get banned then.
It also provide a signature link which is considered as backlink to your site but not every sites gives you this link in the beginning. Some sites give you after some submissions so do read the rules and regulations before posting.
It is beneficial from SEO point of view as it provides backlinks, traffic and increases link popularity of your site.

First read all the instructions of Admin of that forum site. By following this your signature will be kept by the admin and never banned.
