Internal links like a web site's internal menu, navigate to pages within the same site.
External links are links on other sites that link to your site, these are most noteworthy for being important search rank boosters, when honestly created by another webmaster they are seen as a popularity vote for your site. Due to a huge amount of links created solely for search rank manipulation the search engines are using more alternative metrics, like social site references which can be a little harder to fake.
Internal linking refers to how your pages, posts are connected (linked) within your own websites navigation structure or a single website. Relevance is the key here. External is how your web pages or contents reach out (link) to other content sites, urls, etc. Again relevance is key here. Google and other search engines depend on this structure among other things, in order to feed their robot crawlers who in turn spit out the information on to the www.
