It may be better for building search ranking and a following to have no revenue sources until you have significant traffic, like close to 1000 visits a month, small traffic is nit going to pay much, banner ads don't help search ranking.
Of course promoting products that match the content of a site is much more likely to succeed, some like joke sites that have no clear demographic buying pattern, just running ad network banners may be just as good. Some like retargeting ads get dynamically matched to the current viewer's internet history regardless of the page content.
Affiliate offers seems to work best. As far as type of products, it depends on the type of website. If it's geared toward the 13-18 y/o it would be completely different than if it was geared toward 60-85 y/o. Will your news be geared toward the younger crowd or the more mature crowd??? Will it be serious news, financial news, or entertainment news??? You might want to do some research on other news sites to get an idea of what they offer!!! Or you can do like many other sites & use anybody & everybody that pays then stop doing the ones that are the least appealing to your viewers. Amazon seems to be a great one to start out with because they have products that are appealing to ALL ages!!!

My only difference is that I use a really large mailing list to promote affiliate products and to send visitors to my site. Sometimes I use "Museum Quality Art," or "Got An Itch" as a tag line in an email, but I often simply send a banner or video link to an offer I'm promoting, and with emailing I'm quite comfortable with my site.

It will depends on your website theme. If your website is about coupons or something like that, search and look for coupon site. Check their site how they it looks like and how they manage the coupons and how they can market it on the internet. Linkshare and amazon is a good start. They pay great. You can also add google adsense if you want to earn more money.
