All of the domain name registrars like Godaddy and NameCheap will provide a name availability checker. There are also bulk name checking tools on the web that can generate variations of a seed phrase, Godaddy's Bulk Search tab can check a list of names and different TLDs at a time.
There are sites with tools that help you come up with fictitious names, including: wordlab.com, naming.net, wordoid.com, lingzini.com, namestation.com, some of these tools look up the domain name availability as you go.
Specialty sites relying on search engine traffic sometimes incorporate the subject of the site or an exact search phrase in the domain name to slightly boost search engine ranking.
DogCollarKing.com would have an advantage over BowowBoutique.com
Think of the number of possibilities of letters. If you had a single letter .com then you have 26 possible names (a.com, b.com), if you have 2 letters then you have 26 x 26 = 276 possibilities plus the 26 single letter names (302) (aa.com. ab.com.....)
If you carry on with this then you quickly find out how many possible names that there are (4 letter names gives just under half million possibilities). Go to 6 letter names and you have over 300,000,000 possible names that you can use.
IF you only use western characters and not numbers or special characters as well (use letters you 1 character - 36, 2 characters - 1300, 4 characters - 1.7 million and 6 characters - 2.2 Billion possibilities)
And you want a list of all of these and which ones are registered or not... that is a big big list!!
However like you have found you can find out if a name has been registered. I heard that a couple of years ago all the 4 letter names were taken, I guess by now all the 5 letter names would be taken (62,000,000)
If you are trying to create a brandname and must have a .com then you have three choices. You can either buy an existing .com name from the current owner (at a very high markup), you can try to backorder it (which means if the current owner doesn't renew the name you can attempt to register it as soon as it is released) ... or the best option is "create" a new word for you brand.
Your brand name doesn't have to be descriptive, it just had to be distinctive. Many of the most successful brands on the Web have non descriptive names, so don't fall in to the trap of trying to register the obvious names .

It's not necessary to have .com domain for brand. It's very hard to get meaningful .com domains now a days. Check it will domain name site, if avail then register it. You can purchase it from owner also but it will cost you too high.

it is impossible to get a list of what ISN'T being used - only what IS being used - you can forget anything easy or short - those names have been gone for 10-15 yrs - you just have to keep entering choices
I am in the process of thinking of a brand name for my new business. So far the ones I have thought of the .com are taken and it must have this.
Is there anyway that if I put a name in it will give me similar or those available in a .com??
Any advise would be much appreciated!!!
