Why do people hate marketing businesses so much?

They always assume it's a scam.. why?

Because they're trained to be sneaky with how they try to sell you the product and they use scamful techniques... E.g. I used to be an appointment-setter for an educational software company where I would book appointments for a marketing person to go and sell the product... Instead of saying would you like someone to come and show you the product and tell you about it, our job was to ask the customer, "would you like an educational advisor to come and give your kids some free tips and info as a way of saying thank you for filling out our survey" (the survey was where we got the customer phone numbers and details from, some of them dated back years ago and we had to pretend as if it was somewhat recent) so yes, a lot of it is about sneaky tactics and especially about persuasion

Because a lot of them are scams.

My experience with marketing businesses goes as follows:

Sending out a bunch of applications.... the FIRST people to call me back are marketing companies, for "entry level, no experience needed, etc." I enter the name of the company into Google, *nothing* shows up. No description of what the person on the job actually does, just says all kinds of really great things about it.

Go to interview.... office is in some crappy building where there is probably all kinds of asbestos flying around.

Woman at front desk has hair extensions and snake bites on her face.

You go in, and they tell you that you, "Oh, you're still working? Please, get that squared away before you come back because we need people immediately." Why would I quit my job and THEN do a job search? Stupid stupid.

I walk out STILL knowing nothing about the job.

That's why marketing businesses are tricky, because a lot of them are really bizarre.

And they usually turn out to be something completely different than a marketing job... for example, the job will be that you're a model/rep for Energy drinks. But instead of just coming out and saying it, they say "Entry level marketing job! Wowww!!" just because you're wearing a shirt that has a logo on it.

Marketing firms usually do really strange things to get people to buy their product and they are rarely successful. Even the more successful ones (Amway) have REALLY bizarre business models.

Don't confuse telemarketing with "Marketing".

Because they employ telemarketers.

They always assume it's a scam.. why?
