Why is graphic design so undervalued?

In ALL things businesses dont give a f//k about the "goodness" of things

ALL they are interested in is the cost

They dont know what they dont see

(make a cheap crap product now you will make more profits now - but your reputation, sales and profits in the future will go down the pan. Who cares - management will get their bonuses now, and leave the company (no doubt with a "golden goodbye") before the sh//t hits the fan) )

ALL they see is that company A costs more than company B

They DONT see that company B's product will make them more profit than company A's product

So they buy company A's product- And sell Y number of their own product as a result - they are happy.

What they DONT see is that if they had spent say 1.5x as much and bought company B's product they would have sold 2xY number of their own product.

i,.e they dont miss what they never had.

You have actually hit on one of the main causes the UK is in the sh//t now

UK businesses are ruled by accountants whose only aim is to minimise costs "at all costs"

As the saying goes - They know the cost of everything but the value of nothing

This is something I've been asking myself, as a student, for years, since high school.

When I told my friends I got into an art/design school, they practically laughed at me saying that I'm going there because I have nothing else to do.

In college, I've noticed something with internships. Last summer, while working at my school office that works with the school career office (I'm a works study student), American Airlines called, saying they wanted to hire a student to revamp their identity. This is clearly not something for them to hire a student for—they don't want to pay big bucks to professionals that they think they can get it done for cheap by students. A lot of internship employers also tend to only hire student interns for credit, not money. That's a big problem. It's like they're taking advantage of us students and disregarding actual professionals so they can save a penny. It really pisses me off.

Additionally, while interning over the summer, I realized most of the small business owners that desperately needed a revamp in their design, were very closed–minded about design, how much they are willing to pay, etc. It really annoyed me that many small businesses would disregard our help in redesigning their identity and website. It's like they don't understand that design does matter—it seems more professional and most people will judge a company by their website and design and their looks. Except, they do know, they just think that they always have the upperhand and everything should go their way. It really bothers me.

Honestly, I feel like this will go on. Many companies and board members don't understand that design really matters. Steve Jobs did, and his company was very successful, not just in quality of the products, but the packaging, design, function, etc. Not everyone respects design, so it's a shame.

I have yet to start my career in graphic design, but clientsfromhell makes it seem like it can be hell…like there aren't many good clients out there.

Because most people have absolutely no concept of good design, and think of drawing as something they did for fun when they were kids. They don't see why they should have to pay someone to do something that's 'just a passtime', and usually have no way of discerning whether or not they've got their money's worth once the final design is delivered. You can't have any real concept of the value of design if you can't tell what's good or bad.

The world is full of unemployed graphic designers. They act to the disadvantage of others in two ways: they work for next to nothing; or they are unemployed because they are rubbish.

You are being compared with this group, which is why you are getting the 70%.

The ball is in your court to demonstrate the value of good design...

businesses have other costs such as building management and maintenance up and down the country, they also have staff to pay, although I would like to see more money being put into the graphics design aspect of any company but for some they simply don't have the right money schemes set up

Many businesses are strugging to keep afloat in this economy.

They wish they could have the "best", but budgets are a priority.

They are cutting salaries, benefits, etc. Everthing is being cut.

I run a small graphic design agency that prides itself on offering a high level of service. Because the work is done to a good standard I get a lot of job enquiries, 30% of them are worth pursuing. 70% of them are by people who want something for nothing.

In today's competitive market why do business owners still fail to see the value and importance that good design can offer?
